Harrison McIntosh: Selected Works

The classic modernist ceramic work of Harrison McIntosh is the subject of an online exhibition at Frank Lloyd Gallery beginning March 1, 2023. Consummately crafted, perfectly proportioned and full of sophisticated design, McIntosh's vessels have been a strong part of Southern California's modernist heritage for over six decades. He was the model of studio craft, and his work is receiving continued recognition.

The half dozen examples have been chosen to survey the signature forms from the artist's work. Consistent and productive, McIntosh typically presented a refined and balanced vessel with smooth glazes or geometric decoration. With influences from European design, Japanese ceramics and some California traditions, the works have a timeless and elegant refinement. There is a grace and strength to the work of this acknowledged master.

Harrison McIntosh passed away in 2016. It was the gentle spirit of the man that we remember. His calm and balanced way of being was reflected in the work. Suzanne Muchnic wrote in the Los Angeles Times, "McIntosh gently nudged the boundaries of traditional studio pottery by elevating functional objects to a rarefied state of art. Over the next 50 years, he produced an internationally revered body of work that exemplifies a classical vein of the postwar crafts movement."

McIntosh's work is included in over thirty museum and public collections, including American Craft Museum, Crocker Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution.

This online exhibit opens March 1 and continues through April 15, 2023. For more information please visit our website:  www.franklloyd.com, or contact us by email, info@franklloyd.com.
