The recent paintings of Ed Moses will be the subject of an extraordinary exhibition at two galleries in Bergamot Station. The large-scale abstract expressionist works of Ed Moses will be presented in simultaneous shows at Frank Lloyd Gallery and Bobbie Greenfield Gallery. The two galleries are collaborating in order to present the strength and power of the veteran Los Angeles painter, who celebrates his 81st birthday in April. At 81, he paints every day, and he is so driven that he has created an expansive body of work. Moses has stated that he plans to have a show each year, and his vitality is an inspiration.
Primarily composed of large-scale abstract paintings, the two shows will complement each other.The dominant themes of the new work are swirling and looping abstraction, with an open and lyrical sense of pictorial space. The recent paintings are related but distinct bodies of work, so that there will be a dialogue between the two galleries. By this simultaneous presentation, the paintings will receive the attention that they deserve.
Moses (born 1926 in Long Beach) has an extensive history with the medium of painting, and his lyrical abstractions date from the 1950s. Throughout his career, Moses has focused on process, materials, and improvisation. Moses has been exhibiting since 1949, and was part of the original group of artists from the Ferus Gallery in 1957. His work was documented in a major retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 1996. Museum collections include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Menil Foundation, the Museum of Modern Art, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. |
