In a one person show at the Frank Lloyd Gallery from February 26 – March 26, 2005, Cindy Kolodziejski presents new work. Nine sculptures display her masterful painting on distinctive new ceramic forms. These elegant, unusual vessels are distorted until they seem to drip and slide through the metal stands on which they hang. Their glazed surfaces display patterns ranging from cellular structures to soap bubbles, and much of the imagery revolves around the ebb and flow of liquids. Kolodziejski will also present five intricately rendered graphite drawings of related forms and patterns.
Tweaking form and abstracting familiar imagery, Kolodziejski creates a haunting new body of work. Cosmic Drip, a refined conical vessel suspended by an iron-black beaker stand, displays a delicate web of rosy cells that is both alluring and unsettling. At the vessel's tip hangs a small droplet of pinkish fluid, poised to fall. These combinations of the surreally beautiful with the vaguely creepy abound in Kolodziejski's work. As Peter Frank noted in a 2002 L.A. Weekly review,
"Exquisite craft powers the work of Cindy Kolodziejski as does the ability, and need, to devote that craft to near-hallucinatory imagery. The ceramist has tapped into the body anxiety of our Zeitgeist and run with it, turning our corporeal angst about death – and sex and physical deterioration and visceral vulnerability – into something engaging, humorous and even beautiful".
Kolodziejski, born in Augsburg, Germany in 1962, is a Los Angeles based artist who has been exhibiting her ceramic sculpture for the past fifteen years. She has gained recognition in recent years, receiving California Community Foundation/J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts Individual Artist Grant for 2003, as well as the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Award for 2003. Her work has been included in two major exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and is included in the collections of the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. |
