Archive Scot Heywood New Paintings November 12-December 19, 2009 click here for exhibition artwork      Opening Reception: Thursday, November 12, 2009 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm New paintings focusing on geometric planes of color and the interaction of refined surface techniques are the subject of Scot Heywood's exhibit at Frank Lloyd Gallery. In the evolution of abstract painting and sculpture, the use of geometric form with a limited palette is widespread, ranging from the Russian Suprematist compositions to minimal paintings. Scot Heywood's paintings relate directly to the Minimal art of the late 20th century, as well as the origins of geometric abstraction in such artists as Kasimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian. Heywood's exquisite attention to detail and presentation are evident in the careful placement of individual panels, as well as the refined diagonal layering of paint. As Los Angeles Times critic David Pagel also notes in a review of the artist's 2003 exhibition, "Heywood's works also bring the gallery walls into the composition. They become negative space, defined by 'notches' in the painting's upper right and lower left corners. The generic whiteness of the walls emphasizes the sensuality of his brushed and rolled surfaces." Scot Heywood is self-taught and has been exhibiting in Los Angeles since 1986, and this will be his 12th one-person show. His work has been included in over two dozen significant group exhibits, and is represented in numerous collections including the Frederick Weisman Foundation.
